What's Your Crazy Idea?

On Thursday Frank Warren came to UNI, sponsored by CAB.  I'm not a member of CAB or anything, but they put on some AWESOME things at UNI and they are free, check out their Facebook page for more info.  He is the creator of the PostSecret phenomenon, with books and a blog.  He created this idea on a whim, he talked about how he felt called to do this and he wasn't sure why.  What seemed like a crazy idea turned out to be life changing.  He challenged us to think about what OUR crazy idea was.  It got me thinking, blogger was probably a crazy idea, Twitter was probably silly when 20 people did it, and I remember when Facebook was just for college students.   Think about if WE had a crazy idea that involved technology, imagine how helpful it would be for educators (because since we are educators of course my idea would help my people).   then thought, what if my use of technology in class inspires a student to create the next big thing--or even just the next little thing.  Technology inspires, and Frank's crazy idea would not have been possible without the Internet.  The power of technology gives us a platform to think of our next idea.  So what's your crazy idea?

  1. My crazy idea, although I know it's slowly becoming a forefront in educational technology, is using video games in the classroom. I think that besides the fun factor that video games introduce, they can help show many abstract or hard-to-teach ideas, like physics or basic engineering concepts, that would otherwise be very tough to show to students.

  2. Everyone needs a Crazy idea. What is your Crazy idea, Cassie? Mine is to create a learning environment for students that is as exiting for them as it is for me.

wouldn't it be fun to have people share their crazy ideas?

  4. I don't know if this is crazy, but I use videos in my classroom for instruction everyday. I have had so many students comment on how the learning is at their pace. People do think I am crazy because I usually do not start class with a formal introduction, we just start. I feel this saves a lot of time. It also frees me up to have the important conversations with different groups working together and challenging them to expand on their ideas.

  5. I think that using Kinect in the classroom would be pretty crazy. I know they're developing new programs all the time, and it would be a fun way to get kids active!

  6. Meghan, love love love that idea! I'm not an elementary ed major, but how neat would that be! My methods text book talked about using music and/or stretching and active movement to get kids more on track. I'm taking Zumba and my roommate talked about using one of the songs has Wiggle Wiggle just a little bit (it is a hard but fun dance), she said she planned on using it in her room to get kids moving! The Kinect would be something similar--or indoor recess? Hello, so many opportunities!
